Drug-running Submarines
United States and Ecuadoran agents captured a new submarine prior to it's maiden voyage. It had been designed and built to smuggle tons of illicit drugs.

Space War
What I continually find amazing is the head-in-the-sand attitude I've run into when you mention the topic of Space War. There are a great many, normally intelligent people that pooh-pooh the idea and say "there are laws against it and besides, the UN will never allow it, etc.".
The first nation to establish a permanent base on the moon will be able to dictate whatever they wish to any other nation on Earth. In military terms, it's called "the ultimate high ground". All it takes is a railgun on the lunar surface and nuclear weapons become the dinosaurs of military technology.
It has been whispered in space research circles for the past few years, that if you want to become a lunar colonist, then you had better learn to speak Chinese.
That is why I'm not really surprised at this news announcement.

Electric Cars Sound Off!
One of the ongoing complaints about electric vehicles is that they are dead silent when running properly. There have been several discussions among lawmakers to mandate some sort of sound system.
It appears that Nissan is going to be first to jump ahead of the game.
Their new ride will make a sound like the 'spinners' from Blade Runner.

Robots in War
We are seeing a quiet revolution in the US Military. More and more robots are being used in order to save human lives and to [cough] save money.
There are a lot of old-school fighter jockeys that are screaming about the fact that this year, for the first time, there are more pilots flying UAVs from desktops than are actually in the air, over Afghanistan.
This recent Yahoo News article discusses it.

Lovely New Trimarans
We're seeing a revolution in ship design that I think is unprecedented since the switch from sails to steam. Consider than by 2014, 20% of the US Navy fleet will be composed of high speed trimarans based on the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) design that went into service just a few years ago.

Stem Cell Research in China
It looks like the Chinese are going to take the lead in stem cell research. A new company is offering treatments for a lot of afflictions that are considered untreatable here in the US.
There is a comment about extending life expectancy to 120 years plus. Although most of us would welcome that, it does bring up a lot of questions as to where we're going to put all those extra people.

Railguns are Real!
Long the subject of Science Fiction, magnetic railguns may soon be part of the US Navy's arsenal.
Imagine five meter accuracy at 200 miles and a solid metal projectile hitting at Mach five!

This is a poor-man's version of the Microsoft Surface. The big difference is that it is an open source project and the plans are available for any company to mass produce them.
